Technical Tips for Audio

This page is just a running list of notes. Please contact me if you’re having some sort of problem you think I can help with: bjshengr *at* gmail *dot* com

The sound files don’t work in any readers that I know of. Don’t be a lazy bum: click over to the website!

They seem to work for most people most of the time, but even for me they hiccup sometimes. Here are some observations:

Typical behavior should be

  1. Click on the arrow to play the file (click again for IE)
  2. Watch the file load (green line snaking over to the right)
  3. File starts playing automatically
  4. You can drag the positioner back and forth to hear what you want

TROUBLESHOOTING

  • ERROR message, something like “file not found”. This probably indicates I’ve screwed something up. Send me an email and I’ll see what I can do
  • File LOADS but never starts playing, i.e. you see the green line but it just won’t start. This happens to me occasionally in Firefox. I can almost always just close the browser and open it back up again and everything will be fine.
  • Chipmunk voices. I probably screwed up the bit rate. Send me an email :^)
  • Bad sound quality. Sorry, that’s par for the course. I’m dealing with cheap, portable equip (i.e. my cell phone most of the time)

Technology requirements

  • The player uses adobe flash, so you might have to install it — but most people have it already. Here’s the install site
  • They work better in Firefox than IE. I haven’t tested them in Safari. Internet Explorer requires you to click once to activate the control, then click again on the play arrow
